A German arachnologist has named a large hairy spider after the Thin White Duke.

Heteropoda davidbowie hails from Malaysia (as opposed to Mars), and is described as being "Completely harmless".

Peter Jaeger, the spider man who discovered the species, says attaching the rocker's name to the beastie will help raise awareness about endangered spider species worldwide.

Bowie isn't the first muso with a spidery sibling...last year US biologist Jason Bond christened a newly discovered species of trapdoor spider Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi after the Canadian singer.

We're assured that the spider shown in the photo is NOT to scale.
