What makes a classic guitar special? Could it be Werewood?

Any guitarists lucky enough to own a guitar with a special something about it may be surprised to know that the magic stems from when the tree it originally came from was cut down.

Ervin Somogyi, a veteran guitar maker of some 40 years experience, told Premier Guitar magazine about an ancient European tradition of forestry based on the felling trees at specific phases of the moon, which apparently makes a big difference to the wood.

“Wood that is felled in accordance with lunar cycles is referred to as ‘full-moon wood,’" says Ervin. "I’m always tempted to think of it as ‘werewood’.

Apparently it’s not as daft as it sounds; violin maker Antonio Stradivari used only “moon wood” for his legendary instruments.
