The pair teamed up again in 2003 after a break of 18 years to record the album I Can't Stop.
Mitchell, who suffered a heart attack two weeks ago, worked most recently with Rod Stewart on his Soulbook album.
Al Green is due to arrive in Australia this week for his first ever Australian tour, with shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

What a good innings old Willie Mitchell had. There's no way you could imagine all those early Al Green recordings on Hi Records without that magic production. That gorgeous Memphis drum sound was entirely his handiwork. I do wonder how his passing will affect Al's performances in Sydney over the next few days. I guess Al has a faith that Willie is leaning over a massive mixing desk somewhere in that great studio in the sky
