Houston was found in a room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel by paramedics who performed CPR for about 20 minutes before declaring the pop star dead.
In recent years, Houston's career was overshadowed by substance abuse following her turbulent marriage to fellow musician Bobby Brown.
The singer was clearly suffering vocal problems during her Australian Tour in October 2010, with many fans walking out of her performances.
