Topper uncovers Casbah foundations
In a Rolling Stone interview, Topper sat down at the piano and played the original version of the song that he presented to the rest of the band back in 1981.
Although Topper says he has no recollection of the original lyrics, former Clash co-manager Kosmo Vinyl recalls that the song was originally a somewhat off-colour tribute to Headon's girlfriend at the time. “He had really pornographic lyrics for it if I remember correctly,” Vinyl said.
By the time that the song had become a worldwide hit, Headon had been kicked out of the band due to a severe addiction to herion; he didn't even get to appear in the video.
"The good thing about it was we all ended up friends afterwards," said a clean, sober - and forgiving - Topper.
