The single is dead - long live the download
JB HiFi are the latest in a line of stores who will no longer stock the actual CD.
Australia's singles charts are now largely compiled from online download sales, and some believe that the demise of the single signals the end of all physical music formats.
Paul Cashmere, of website undercover.com.au, said:
"The downside of the elimination of the CD single is that we are no longer focused on artists, we are focused on songs...People have simply stopped becoming fans of acts."
The latest ARIA charts demonstrate the difference between digital track and physical single sales, with Michael Jackson figuring prominently in the digital downloads top 10 without the need for a physical 're-pressing' of his singles.
