Jammie Thomas-Rasset
Nov 9, 2010 Updated Nov 15, 2010

A woman in the US has been ordered to pay a staggering 1.5 million dollars in fines for illegally downloading music.

The Recording Industry Association of America won its case against Jammie Thomas-Rasset of Minnesota who they sued for downloading 24 songs in February 2005 via the filesharing site Kazaa. The jury found Thomas-Rasset guilty of copyright infringement and ordered her to pay $62,500 for each of the 24 tracks.

The mother of four says she simply can't pay “Any amount that I pay to them is money that I could use to feed my children. Any amount that I pay to them is money I could use to clothe my kids and pay my mortgage…”

The 24 songs Thomas-Rasset downloaded were:

Aerosmith – 'Cryin’'
Bryan Adams – 'Somebody'
Def Leppard – 'Pour Some Sugar on Me'
Destiny’s Child – 'Bills, Bills, Bills'

This is why America is going down the toilet. This is lunacy beyond belief. Where is the justice in destroying some persons life for a hand full of songs (only a few of which are any good anyway). How can you not be angry at this. Seriously. I'd like to see any one of the artists involved tell this woman that they justify her fine of $1.5 million and demand that she start paying up. If this is supposed to defend the artists rights then let's hear from them.

You make a great point, Guy...I wonder how the likes of Gloria Estefan, Sarah McLachlan and Green Day would feel about this...?

Good comment Guy.

But given her post trial comments, I can't help but see the irony dripping by the container load off Jammie's selection from the Destiny's Child catalogue!!

America is already well through the S-bend.

Her music is her only possible saviour.

Derek Trucks for President I say.

And preferably via downloading the voting paper.

btw - I'm intrigued as to which three of her songs you are pitching up for.

"Cryin", "Run Baby Run" and "Basket Case" per chance?
