Sounds delicious...
Boffins at Oxford University in the UK have conducted a series of experiments in which participants were invited to match the sounds of various musical instruments with a corresponding smell, and there were surprising consistencies in the smells people chose. Piano was often paired with fruity scents and with smells that participants said were "less complex". Musky and unpleasant smells, meanwhile, were regularly paired with brass instruments.
No surprise there...
Test participants also tasted identical pieces of toffee while listening to different musical soundscapes, and found the taste to be more bitter or sweeter, depending on which music they were listening to.
Apparently this is an example of what's called crossmodal perception, where certain senses - previously thought to work in isolation - combine to produce an overall sensation.
