Malcolm McLaren, the British former manager of the Sex Pistols and self-proclaimed mastermind behind the iconic punk band, has died aged 64.

According to his girlfriend, Young Kim, McClaren died at a Swiss hospital where he was receiving ongoing treatment for cancer.

Those close to him say the news has come as a shock, because he had seemed in reasonable health, despite his cancer.

British media have reported that McLaren's body is to be flown back to the UK and buried in London's Highgate cemetery.

"Malcolm McLaren was a man who changed the world and is a lasting influence," his girlfriend said. "Without him the world would be a very different place culturally in art, music and fashion."

Back in the late 80's I was a part of a film crew making a doco on the Sydney Biennale. Malcolm McLaren was one of the big attraction that year and we were just Babes in the Woods. We arranged face to face to meet him for an interview but after a number of assurances eventually he didn't turn up. So again we tracked him down and arranged another to the same result.
It became apparent that he was doing this deliberately as he found it amusing to make us look like schmucks and for us to lose money on crew payments?
I reflect on this often: what kind of person got their thrills by kicking out the chair from someone else?
The doco never got finished as the money ran out (like good Victorians and Australians, everyone got paid though).
Though I know a lot of people got a lot from punk, to me a lot of what MMcL was just ugly and stupid, exploitive and co-opted from others.

McClaren always struck me as a shameless, obnoxious self publicist who delighted in annoying and putting out things to irritate and confront everyone. IMHO absolute genius ! In mid to late '70s UK where I grew up he gave us 'The Pistols' and an outlet for our angst and with Vivienne the outrageous fashion to shock our parents and society. Ugly and obnoxious can be beautiful and bold and helped spawn some educated lefty agitprop which we still hold dear today. Even tho' you were annoying I appreciate very much what you did so thanks Malc.
