Ruby Hunter 1955-2010
A proud Ngarrindjeri woman, Ruby was born near the banks of the Murray River in South Australia.
When only eight years old, she was forcibly removed from her family and grew up in foster homes and institutions, eventually living on the streets in Adelaide where she met soulmate and musical partner Archie Roach when she was just 16 years old.
Hunter's manager Jill Shelton says the musician passed away overnight at home in western Victoria.
In an interview for the ABC's Talking Heads in 2008, Ruby said:
"I was born in South Australia in the Riverland at a billabong. When I was born, I was rubbed in the ashes and held up to the moon. It was up at the Coorong and that's where I remember the music".

My deepest sympathy to Ruby's family, what a sad loss.
I saw Ruby Hunter perform on Sunday afternoon at the St kilda Festival.
She was a wonderful singer, entertainer and amazingly warm woman with so much love and wisdom.
Ruby's music will live on, but today is a sad day. Rest in Peace.
Thank you Ruby.
We'll miss you Ruby - thanks for the love & the life you shared with us... BLESS YOU!
Ruby was totally unique. A great artist and an amazing person. I had the pleasure of meeting her a few times at gigs in the 1990s. I am saddened by the news of her passing.
I remember an interview where the special romance she shared with Archie was so moving ! Thanx Ruby R.I.P.
What a loss - such a beautiful, wise and kind woman. We have seen Ruby perform several times over the years with the most recent in Byron Bay where she made the time to meet our 6 month old twin boys before the show started - such warmth. We extend our deepest thoughts and sympathy to Archie and all the family.
What a shock! I just saw her singing with Archie Roach at Federation Square 9 days ago. She looked so healthy and happy up there. It's hard to believe. And just a week into the new tour with Archie.
R.I. P. dear Ruby
