Ringing the changes

James Mercer
Oct 1, 2009 Updated Oct 2, 2009

Shins frontman James Mercer has formed a new project, Broken Bells, with DJ and producer Danger Mouse, and the pair plan to release a debut album in 2010.

The band has been tentatively named Broken Bells, although Mercer and Mouse can't guarantee the name will stick.  They have, however, launched a Broken Bells website, confirming their commitment to the project.

The news leaves fans doubting the future of Mercer's band The Shins, although his songwriting style is expected to morph into Broken Bells territory. The songwriter claims that he has up to 30 tracks that were not released with The Shins.

This new material is likely to make the cut for Broken Bells' first album, due out on Columbia Records next year.
