Unveiling a new lineup yesterday, Reznor also confirmed plans for "a full-on arena tour" in 2014.
The revived band includes former King Crimson vocalist Adrian Belew and Eric Avery - formerly with Jane's Addiction - on bass.
Reznor said in a statement: "We were working on some musical ideas, which led to some discussion on performing, which led to some beard-scratching, which (many steps later) led to the decision to rethink the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be".
