Graham Nash and John Cale
Jun 15, 2010 Updated Jun 18, 2010

John Cale and Graham Nash were awarded OBEs in the Queen's Birthday Honours List, announced over the weekend.

68-year-old Cale co-founded the Velvet Underground in New York with Lou Reed in the mid 60s, but left the band after just three years following a falling-out with Reed. He went on to pursue an acclaimed solo career as an artist and record producer.

Graham Nash had already established himself as a musician in the UK with his band The Hollies, before moving to California in the late 60s to form Crosby, Stills and Nash with David Crosby and Stephen Stills (later to be joined by Neil Young).

Nash, now a US citizen, said of the award:"Everything I learned about being a decent human being I learned in England and I am grateful to be honored by the country of my birth."

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) awards are given for notable service to the United Kingdom in a range of fields, including entertainment.
