New research by online music trackers Songkick suggests that marketing and distribution costs have never been higher, and that the number of people making ends meet from music is down to less than 30 thousand worldwide.

Songkick CEO Ian Hogarth analyzed his database of bands by the types of venues being played, and the likely incomes associated with that level of venue, coming up with a figure of between 25 and 30 thousand people who actually make some sort of sustainable income from their craft.
