Melbourne mourns loss of music icon

The Tote
Jan 17, 2010 Updated Jan 21, 2010

Melbourne music lovers voted with their feet on the weekend as thousands gathered to mourn the closure of a live music institution, The Tote.

The Collingwood venue closed its doors for the very last time on Monday January 18, citing inflexible state licensing laws as the reason for its demise. (Read all the legal details at ABC Radio's AM)

The Tote emerged as one of Melbourne's groundbreaking live music venues in the early 1980s and went on to host performances from emerging and established acts including the Hoodoo Gurus, the White Stripes, the Dirty Three, Magic Dirt and You Am I.

A rally of support, primarily organised via online sites such as Facebook, saw several thousand people fill the streets around the iconic Melbourne pub on Sunday evening to hear speeches from the licensee, Bruce Milne, and local celebrities including Rod Quantock (who generously estimated the crowd to be 20,000 strong).

An emotional Milne told the crowd "the Tote is gone" but he expressed hope that the martydom of this Collingwood icon could trigger a change in law which would save similar venues in the city.

The Tote hosted its final gig on Monday with bands performing from 2pm until the plug was pulled for the very last time.
