Lou Reed on stage
Oct 14, 2011 Updated Oct 17, 2011

Lou Reed has been hailed as Rock 'n' Roll's Most Overrated Lyricist.

Music website Flavorwire compiled the list, which also features Matt Bellamy of Muse, Jim Morrison of The Doors and Bob Dylan.

Reed took out the title because, according to the site he's quote "responsible for a surprising number of pretty awful lyrics. When he’s on form, he’s up with the very, very best. But we think he’s dropped enough stinkers over the years to not entirely merit his reputation as a consistently great lyricist.”

Rock'n'Roll's Most Overrated Lyricists (according to Flavorwire):

1. Lou Reed
2. Paul Banks of Interpol
3. Serj Tankian of System of a Down
4. Bernard Sumner of New Order
5. Matt Bellamy of Muse
6. Conor Oberst
7. Jim Morrison
8. Robert Plant
9. Chris Martin of Coldplay
10. Bob Dylan

ha ha...I love these lists...

Lou Reed's lyrics @ his drug-fu*ked worst could not compare to the lyrics of Stock Aitken & Waterman who assaulted the music industry for far too long without ever being held accountable...stinker after stinker and no one put a stop to it...and now no one reflects on how bad they really were and poor old Lou writes a couple of questionable lines during a period of time somewhere between Great and Greater and he's voted "worst lyricist of all time"...

Hi Andy...ta for the comments.

It's actually 'Most Overrated'... I don't think anyone could honestly say he was the worst...there's too many other contenders! 'Overrated' is hard to quantify, but it seems - like you say - that all that it takes is for a good writer to have a lapse or two, and bingo!...they're on the list.
