Live music gets a break

The Tote
Feb 23, 2010 Updated Feb 25, 2010

Melbourne's live music venues have been given a reprieve

The Victorian Government has announced a backdown on its contentious liquor licensing laws.

As part of a crackdown on street violence, the Government introduced new laws earlier this year requiring all late-night venues with live amplified music to put on extra security.

The requirement dramatically increased the operating costs of many businesses and was largely responsible for the demise of legendary Collingwood live music venue The Tote.

Under the amended conditions, if a venue has not breached the Liquor Licensing Act and does not have a problem with violence, it will not be required to employ bouncers unless the police say it is necessary.

Former Tote licensee Bruce Milne says it would have saved the venue if it had come through earlier.

"I am sort of astounded that common sense has come through," he said.
