The Cure's Robert Smith, Beck and Snow Patrol have all recorded tracks for a tribute album dedicated to the late guitar legend John Martyn.

The likes of David Gray, The Swell Season, Beth Orton  and Morcheeba have also covered Martyn songs on the record, entitled Johnny Boy Would Love This – A Tribute To John Martyn, which will be released on August 15.

Martyn, who died in January 2009 shortly after being awarded an OBE, released 20 studio albums throughout his career.

Phil Collins – who worked with Martyn on his albums Grace and Danger and Glorious Fool, said: "John Martyn was unique. Completely unique. He had such power, such emotion, in his music that he could overwhelm the listener even when it was just him and an acoustic guitar."

A wonderful songwriter that fused folk with Jazz. A great talent sadly passed and missed.

Started listening to John Martyn in his Auntie Aviator days with Beverly Martyn and instantly just fell in love with his music. Was heartbroken when he died but this tribute album will most certainly fill a gap.

I still reckon it'd be a bit weird hearing other folks covering the songs....has anyone heard John's last and latest album Heaven and Earth yet? Some lovely moments on that record, but sad too...
