Leiber and Stoller - who met when they were 17 - wrote for the likes of Elvis Presley, the Drifters, Ben E King and Peggy Lee.
They also helped launch the career of The Coasters by writing and producing the vocal group's biggest hits including 'Yakety Yak', 'Charlie Brown' and 'Along Came Jones'.
In other news, US songwriter Nickolas Ashford, who wrote iconic hits Ain't No Mountain High Enough and I'm Every Woman with wife Valerie Simpson, has died at the age of 70.
The duo met in the early 1960s at White Rock Baptist Church in Harlem, where Valerie played the piano and sang in the church choir.
Ashford and Simpson were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002.
