Ongoing hearing problems, a dislocated vertebra and nerve damage in his hands have finally proven too much for the 60-year-old.
In a weekend interview, Collins says that now is a good time to stop making music: “I look at the MTV Music Awards and I think, ‘I can’t be in the same business as this’, he said, adding "I don’t really belong to that world and I don’t think anyone’s going to miss me."
Collins even apologised to his critics, saying “It’s hardly surprising that people grew to hate me". Making special mention of Noel Gallagher’s tirade against him, Collins said “He definitely seems to consider me the Anti-Christ of music...I have, at times, been very down about it.”
