Gurrumul soars to Number 1 on UK World Music Chart
After playing a couple of dates in the UK this week, his hugely successful debut album, sung mostly in his native Yolngu language, has just reached number one on the official The Official UK World Music Album Chart.
Before heading to the UK, Gurrumul received the prestigious APRA Award for ‘Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year’ and his self-titled album achieved double-platinum status in Australia after staying in the ARIA charts for 59 consecutive weeks.
Gurrumul has so far received 19 significant awards since the release of his album last year.
Artist Biography
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu (born 1970) is an Indigenous Australian musician, who sings in the Yolngu language. He was born in Galiwin'ku, off the coast of Arnhem Land, Northern Australia about 580 kilometres from Darwin. He is from the Gumatj clan of the Yolngu and his mother from the Galpu nation. He was born blind, has never learned Braille and does not have a guide dog or use a white cane....
