Gurrumul heads stateside

Singer-songwriter Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu will release his eponymous solo debut album in the US on June 15.

In the UK, where the album was released last year, it was named one of the top ten world-music releases of 2009 by the BBC.

Mainland Europe was equally keen...the album achieved best-selling world music status in both Germany and Switzerland.

To coincide with the release of the album stateside, Gurrumul will be announcing US tour dates soon.

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu (born 1970) is an Indigenous Australian musician, who sings in the Yolngu language. He was born in Galiwin'ku (Elcho Island), off the coast of Arnhem Land, Northern Australia about 350 miles from Darwin. He is from the Gumatj clan of the Yolngu and his mother from the Galpu nation.
