Fast train to Phoenix

Phoenix
Feb 16, 2011 Updated Feb 17, 2011

Parisian posters Phoenix are road-testing Aussie musicians for their next album.

The band - in town for last weekend's Good Vibrations festival - have been recording with Byron Bay percussionist, performer and composer, Michael Askill, who’s a founding member of Steve Reich collaborators Synergy Percussion and Principal Percussionist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for a number of years.

According to Phoenix vocalist Thomas Mars, the band's next album will sound pretty different to their guitar-driven 2009 effort Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

After using words such as "nostalgic", "futuristic", "experimental" and "minimal" to describe the new material, he went on to - somewhat cryptically - compare it to France's high-speed train, the TGV.

Lost in translation? Maybe...
