The NSW Premier has shrugged off criticism for losing a bidding war with Victoria to attract golfer Tiger Woods, saying he would rather have Brian Eno in Sydney.

Premier Nathan Rees has announced today that the renowned music producer and solo artist will curate a music festival at the Sydney Opera House as part of the new 'Vivid Sydney' event, which will be held for three weeks in May and June.

The announcement came as the Victorian Government declared it had beat NSW to lure Tiger Woods to November's Australian Masters in Melbourne.

The golfer will reportedly be payed $4.5 million, with Victorian taxpayers to foot half of the appearance fee.

The Professional Golf Association says Tiger Woods' visit to Melbourne will provide a huge boost to golf in Australia, but five-time British Open champion Peter Thomson believes it will hurt sponsorship of Sydney's Australian Open.

Mr Rees has rejected suggestions his state has lost out. He says getting Eno to come to Sydney is a coup.

"I would much rather Brian Eno's work on display for the people of New South Wales for three weeks than Tiger Woods for three days," he said. "I think that is a better spend of taxpayer dollars."

Eno, a former member of Roxy Music, is renowned for his solo work as a pioneer of ambient music and has collaborated with and produced albums for U2, Coldplay, David Bowie and Talking Heads.

But NSW Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell says the musician is a B-grade talent.

"I'm sorry to upset the ABC demographic, I'm sorry to upset the ABC newsroom," he said.

"Get outside the building and go and talk to the public about who they are likely to go and see, Brian Eno or Tiger Woods. I will suspect you will find most people will go and see Tiger Woods."
