Dylan: Great setlist, but...

Bob Dylan
Nov 16, 2010 Updated Nov 25, 2010

Fans looking forward to Bob Dylan's Bluesfest appearance next year, take note.

NPR's Bob Boilen saw him perform at the weekend, prompting him to write an article entitled "Nobody Ruins Dylan Like Dylan", in which he compares what looks like a dream set list - including 'Just Like a Woman' and 'Like a Rolling Stone' - with the harsh reality of a performance which - for Mr Boilen at least - fell far short of expectations.

"The melodies are gone, the singing is often staccato" says Bob "It was nearly impossible to make out the words if you didn't already know them...it was a disappointment”.

Here's last weekend's setlist:

1.    Rainy Day Women
2.    Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power)
3.    Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
4.    Just Like A Woman
5.    Rollin' And Tumblin'
6.    Tryin' To Get To Heaven
7.    Summer Days
8.    Desolation Row
9.    High Water (For Charley Patton)
10.  Simple Twist Of Fate
11.  Highway 61 Revisited
12.  Ain't Talkin'
13.  Thunder On The Mountain
14.  Ballad Of A Thin Man

(encore)
15.  Jolene
16.  Like A Rolling Stone

No buts. Dylan is something special and always will be.
His wavering ability to sing and perform fifty years on is a very small reflection on him and his talent.
Give the man a break. He's done his time, he's given his magic to the world and surely now his concerts are about being reminded of that magic- even if it is just a little.
