Council bypassed in Splendour talks

Splendour in the Grass
Jul 28, 2009 Updated Jul 29, 2009

The mayor of Byron is disappointed that her council won't have a say in the future of the Splendour in the Grass festival.

The North Byron Shire Parklands group has scrapped plans for a trial event and will instead go straight to the state government with its plans to establish a permanent venue for the festival at Yelgun.

Cr. Barham says she's worried that local concerns may be ignored. "I don't think it's going to be very well received by many in the community," she said.

Mat Morris, the General Manager for North Byron Parklands, says the scope of the project means it now falls outside the consent of the local council.

This year's festival was held last weekend (July 25-26) in the Belongil Fields, 2km from Byron Bay's town centre.

Splendour is a great festival - I hope the locals don't get messed around...
