Confused and Dazed
Because it sounds just like a folk song - or so says folk singer Jake Holmes, who's now suing Zep's guitarist, Jimmy Page.
According to the Federal lawsuit obtained by TMZ, Holmes says he bagged copyright for the tune in 1967, two years before Zeppelin recorded their version, which does sound remarkably similar.

It ain't all bad news for Mr Page, though, because even if a court decides that injustice has been done, Holmes can only sue for damages from the last 3 years, because of the US statute of limitations.
As for why Holmes waited so long to sue ...his lawyer had no comment.

no, they knew exactly what they were doing - fully embracing SD&R&R!!
What's new - 'Whole lotta love' is a straight out rip off from Muddy Waters http://www.whosampled.com/sample/view/8670/Led%20Zeppelin-Whole%20Lotta%...
Well at least on Whole Lotta Love, Willie Dixon - who wrote You Need Love for Muddy Waters - was eventually listed in the songwriting credits...
Page first played/recorded the song with the Yardbirds - is on live in New york album that he had pulled as soon as it was released back in the day. I'm pretty sure it was called 'I'm Confused' on that, and there is no doubt hearing that that it basically a cover of the Jake Holmes song. This was before Page even met Plant...
Willie Dixon had to sue Led Zeppelin to get any satisfaction. One of the landmark cases that led Willie to establish the Heaven foundation to try to get some justice for blues musicians who had been ripped off by those who professed to idolise them. Love in Vain credited to Woody Payne (aka Jagger/Richards) might have been in the public domain but should have been acknowledged as a Robert Johnson song. Lots of other examples. Dig into Willie Dixon. The amount of songs that he wrote that have been covered by all and sundry would astound a lot who don't know the man! You Shook Me (covered by Led Zep on their first album) Little Red Rooster, Spoonful..
No one played rock and blues like Led Zepplin.and they were all classically trained musicians (well maybe not Bozo)to this day people cannot emulate the exact sound that Jimmy Page accomplished. They were the Everest of Rock everything else that came after was a watered down version.
