Carly's whisper

Carly Simon and David Geffen
Mar 1, 2010 Updated Mar 2, 2010

For nearly four decades, the subject of Carly Simon’s 'You’re So Vain' has remained a mystery...

While fans speculated that Warren Beatty, Mick Jagger and the singer’s ex-husband James Taylor were the egocentric bloke in question, Carly herself has remained tight lipped on the subject...until now.

She told Uncut magazine recently that playing her newly recorded version of the song backwards would reveal the man's name.

Sure enough, a backwards spin of the disc reveals the rather creepily whispered name "David".

Enter new hot favourite David Geffen, head of Elektra records at the time of the song's release. Allegedly, Simon was displeased with the way he chose to support her musical nemesis Joni Mitchell after she also signed with him.

So there you have it. Perhaps.
