According to former Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder, the band's maracas-playing madman Bez once turned down a date with Julia Roberts.

The way Shaun tells it, the band were in LA's infamous Viper Room in the early 90s when Julia spotted Bez and took a shine to him."She invited him home but Bez actually got on more with Evil, her bodyguard...He didn't know who Julia Roberts was."

Ryder recently released his autobiography Twisting My Melon in which he admitted he had no memory of what happened during the last 16 years of his life, so maybe a large pinch of something - preferably salt - is required.

Representatives of Ms Roberts have yet to comment.

Happy Mondays is an English alternative rock band from Salford, Greater Manchester. Formed in 1980, the band's original line-up was Shaun Ryder on lead vocals, his brother Paul Ryder on bass, lead guitarist Mark Day, keyboardist Paul Davis, and drummer Gary Whelan. Mark "Bez" Berry would later join the band onstage during a live performance after befriending Shaun Ryder and served as a dealer....
