Aussie doctor backs Hendrix murder theory

Jimi Hendrix
Jul 22, 2009 Updated Jul 27, 2009

An Australian doctor who attempted to revive Jimi Hendrix in a London hospital nearly forty years ago believes it was possible the guitar legend was murdered.

The murder claims were made in a recent book by a Hendrix roadie, James "Tappy" Wright, who suggested that the rock star was murdered on the orders of his manager, Mike Jeffery.  Wright's book accuses Jeffery of hiring a gang to break into Hendrix's London hotel room and force pills and wine down his throat.

John Bannister of Sydney was the on-call registrar at St Mary Abbots Hospital when Hendrix was brought in on September 18, 1970, drenched in alcohol.

Bannister, who was deregistered as an orthopaedic surgeon in New South Wales for fraudulent conduct in 1992, told The Times nespaper in the UK that he believed Wright's version of what had happened to Hendrix that night sounded plausible because of the volume of wine involved.

"The amount of wine that was over him was just extraordinary...not only was it saturated right through his hair and shirt but his lungs and stomach were absolutely full...he had really drowned in a massive amount of red wine." said Bannister.

At the time, doctors concluded that 27-year-old Hendrix had died from choking on vomit following a drugs overdose.
