Apple's album rescue

Compact Disc
Jul 29, 2009 Updated Jul 30, 2009

Apple is joining forces with the big four record labels in an attempt to revive falling album sales.

It seems that although consumers have happlily taken to buying their music in digital format, they're increasingly choosing to download individual tracks as opposed to entire albums, which have a higher profit margin. As a result, album sales are down 14 per cent in the US, and record companies aren't happy.

Apple is working with EMI, Sony, Warner and Universal to offer interactive booklets, sleeve notes and video clips as extras with album downloads in an effort to boost sales.

The company is looking to launch the project, codenamed Cocktail, in September.
