Ah, McCain...
In August last year, Browne sued Republican presidential nominee John McCain and the Republican National Committee for using his 1977 song Running on Empty in a commercial mocking the then Democratic nominee Barack Obama's energy policy.
Details of the financial settlement weren't revealed, but in addition to the apology, the Republican party has vowed to get artists' permission before using musicians' work in future. Browne was not the only artist unhappy that their music had been used during the campaign...the Foo Fighters My Hero, Heart's Barracuda and John Mellencamp's Our Country and Pink Houses were also used without the artists' say-so.
Browne's lawsuit stated that the singer was concerned that use of his music would cause people to conclude he was endorsing McCain, when in fact he describes himself as a liberal.
