A walk on the noisy side

Lou Reed on stage
Jan 29, 2010 Updated Mar 20, 2010

Lou Reed is to celebrate his most 'challenging' album with a tour of UK and Europe.

The singer will salute the reissue of 1975's Metal Machine Music with gigs by the Metal Machine Trio, boasting "no songs and no vocals"...so probably no encores of 'Walk on the Wild Side', either...

Featuring Lou on processed and unprocessed guitars and mini Continuum, Ulrich Krieger on tenor sax and live-electronics and Sarth Calhoun on live processing and Continuum fingerboard, the MMT concerts, although influenced and inspired by the original album, won’t seek duplicate it but will instead opt for entirely new unique music, noise and soundscapes.

Described by Rolling Stone as "ear-wrecking electronic sludge",  critics - and even some fans - have suggested that the double album was either a joke, or Reed's half-baked fulfilment of a contractual obligation.

But, thirty-five years later, Reed remains unapologetic. A new heavyweight vinyl edition of the album, which he says is "faithfully remastered to the last squeal" (mmm...lovely...) will be released in April. He even recommends buying a new turntable to properly appreciate it.

And in case you were wondering what a Continuum is, it's a keyless touch sensitive synth. So there.
