Old soldiers never die - they rock on.
I went to see the fellas at Northcote social club 25th August 2010, and I have to say listening to their songs from my childhood brought reminiscent tears to my eyes. Way out west - the real version, Boy on the run, Last place that I wanna be, I was like 17 or 18 when these songs were current, I had the records and wore them out. Brod Smith hasn't changed a bit... well maybe slightly less hair, like me... and hearing Chris Stockley's riffs and fills, inspirational. The downside was the crowd of old geezers jammed into such a small place, but for the musical experience it was worth every minute.
To summarise: quite possibly the most moving musical experience I have ever had.
Saw the lads last year at Fly By Night Club in Freo WA and was blown away! The new stuff on Tracks is as good as anything in their great back catalogue, which is not always the case with comeback albums/tours by bands. No Rain No River is a standout and rates as another anthemic classic Oz track like Way Out West.
Saw them again last Saturday 19th Feb '11 at an outdoor concert on South Perth foreshore with Joe Cocker, George Thorogood, Diesel. Dingoes were again in great form but only got to play for an hour; Should have made Diesel's self indulgent set shorter!
Heard from Kerryn Tolhurst that this may be the end of the road for the band; very sad if true! Keep it together guys as we'll keep coming to see you in Perth, just like we did at the Court Hotel and White Sands circa 1973.
Cheers,
Taj (aka Mick)
PS - those beards made Brod and Kerryn look older than they are, but their voices and playing gave them away as young rockers at heart still. Rock on!
