“I'm gonna climb up every mountain of the moon,
And find the dish that ran away with the spoon..."
'Supernaut' – Black Sabbath (1972)
Obviously, when it comes to Black Sabbath songs, it’s always gonna be about the riffs.
Ozzy may be the frontman (and sideshow) but the Black Sabbath ‘sound’ falls mostly to guitarist, Tony Iommi. His Sturm und Drang riffs can invest lyrics, even as benign as those above, with a sense of impending threat. Such a flagrant violation of the first rule of lyric rhyming is even excusable, when paired with a compelling riff. The original lineup (with the exception of drummer, Bill Ward) has famously reconvened for ‘13’, an album intended to echo the creative thrust of their first recordings. Using a few sonic signposts linking straight back to those early albums, Black Sabbath achieved their goal, remarkably without falling into self-parody. In this edition of JR, we find there’s still light, somewhere in the darkness.
At least the Comeback Trail wasn’t totally under Black Sabbath’s dark, foreboding cloud this week. Soul and Gospel veteran, Mavis Staples appeared with ‘One True Vine’, a second album made in collaboration with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, while Bernard Fanning’s long awaited ‘Departures’ also made its …arrival.
The JR Radar was quick to alert us to the just released album by Canadian band, Barenaked Ladies. Now in their 25th year, the songs on ‘Grinning Streak’ are as sharp as ever and odds are that, “Odds Are” may be the most summery song you’ll hear all winter.
Longtime JR favourite, The Tedeschi-Trucks Band have released the first song from their forthcoming album, ‘Made Up Mind’ featuring a nice tip of the hat to Booker T. & The MG’s and Blues Brothers guitarist, Steve Cropper, resurrecting the famous riff he played on Sam & Dave’s 1967 hit, “Soul Man”.
Also signaling a new album on the way is Jack Johnson while Sigur Ros make a strong return with ‘Kveikur’, maintaining Iceland’s bona fides as a music hotspot.
Barenaked Ladies: “Odds Are” (from the album ‘Grinning Streak’)
Bernard Fanning: “Departures (Blue Toowong Skies)”/”Inside Track” (from the album ‘Departures’)
Mavis Staples: “Far Celestial Shore"/”Can You Get To That” (from the album, ‘One True Vine’)
Tedeschi-Trucks Band: ”Part Of Me” (from the forthcoming album, ‘Made Up Mind’)
Black Sabbath: “Zeitgeist” (from the album, ‘13’)
Jack Johnson: “I Got You” (preview from the forthcoming album, ‘From Here, To Now, To You’)
Sigur Ros: “Hrafntinna” (from the album, ‘Kveikur’)

I don't think we need "jocks" on the Dig site, I thought you were trying to get away from that?????
Hi Bill and Brandon , I represent a Sydney based band called whitecitylight who have recently released a four track album some of the tracks are getting airplay on AM rap and Fbi .I would like to send you a copy of the CD where do I post it ? You can listen to the complete album on whitecitylight.com maybe you would like ' For dear life ' or Desent into liberation ' even if you dont play it on your show I would appreciate your comments .Regards Leigh Moulds
Hi Bill and Brandon, I'm not sure how long you have been doing the show but I just thought I'd let you know that I listened to the show for the first time a couple of weeks ago while I was walking my dogs, and _thoroughly_ enjoyed it. In fact, I liked it so much that I took my dogs on another loop of the walk so I could listen to the whole show.
I really enjoyed your music picks -- and the background info you gave on each song before playing it. I also enjoyed the contrast between your two presenting styles -- smooth American pro announcer vs straight-up Aussie :->
I was also very surprised to hear contemporary music playing on ABC 702 -- but I see that "Just Released" is streamed online on ABC 702 Sydney while the sport is on the radio. Being someone who's not interested in sports, I say hurrah for choice!!
I use an app on my iPhone to listen to ABC Radio while walking the dogs, so it looks like I benefited from my technology choice this time round :-)
Keep up the good work. I will be tuning in in the future, probably dividing my attention between you and trying to keep my wayward labradors from tangling up with each other; licking innocent bystanders, etc.
Great to hear another new releases program. That it is different to 2JJJ's "2011" is good (even though yours tends to the middle-of-the-road).
A third encouragement is that it is repeated if we miss it, or want to hear something good again.
I've just heard some of your programme for the first time on ABC local.Excellent, loved it. Will there be repeat of the programme on DIG at the advertised times this week??
Love this show - one of my favourites. It's the kind of show you would never hear on commercial radio who rarely stray from their prescribed format and playlists. Great to hear Bill back on the airwaves as well !! - and on the ABC !! Keep up the good work, guys.
Hi Bill, I just brought one of those new fangled digitial radios and while I was trying to work out how to use it I stumbled across you playing music, took me back to the 1960's 4KQ and the stud.Best times of my life. Memories Pity we have to grow up.I will never forget those days. I keep in touch with Ken Bradford, he is still as mad as ever.Good to hear you doing what you do best.Ran into Dennis Plimmer at Ross Goldsmiths mothers funeral recently.
Ah parties at the stud how good were they!!!!!!!!!!!!
cheers Peter Daff (now retired and turning into a grumpy old man well that's what SHE tells me)
Love the reviews
I heard this program for the first time today on Dig Radio. Loved listening to the music and especially the commentary. Jocks with style! Congratulations on a great show. I would like more commentary on Dig Radio but I wouldn't be surprised if I am flying in the face of the popular viewpoint.
Is there a podcast available of this? I'd love to be able to subscribe to it.
The program's not available as a podcast, due to copyright restrictions, but is available as a media on demand via the Just Released website http://abc.net.au/local/justreleased
Awesome, thanks for letting me know James. It's a shame it's done with a Flash control because it means it won't work on iPhone... it'd be great if you could see if it could be done with standard HTML5 at some point so it can work on browsers without Flash...
Apart from the fact that I just luv Saturdays, "Just Released" makes them even better. I'm usually on the run so really appreciate this site so I recap & catch-up anything I missed. Long live "Just Released".
Such a great line up of beautiful songs. Thanks Dig for exposing the public to an eclectic variety of musicians.
Can't believe people aren't continually commenting on this fantastic show which highlights a great sample of new music every week - together with Dig Radio's 'Untidy Desk', it's the Oz version of the US NPR "All Songs Considered."
I am loving that Oh Mercy song!
Not bad at all gentleman, thanks. An indispensable part of Dig Music.
Hi Bill:
Was on the ABC web site looking for news from home and came across Just Released. Can't believe I'm sitting here in Ottawa and listening to your voice after all these years. It seems like yesterday we were hanging out at the Drive-In watching that Al Pacino movie that scared us straight for life. Hope your liver survived the Cold Duck - heard it went out of production in 1974.
Not surprised to see you have been very successful in your career and are still at it.
Love the show, especially the Aussie content. Interesting to see how things are evolving in that lovely part of the world, Qld.
It made my week to discover the show on Dig. Especially with Donald Fagan and Graham Parker featured. Fabulous to have a real music station available at long last.
Just discovered your show. LOVE IT!!! Thank you so much.
I love that you do this and include local musicians and bands - I wish more Aussie new music was played on commercial stations - so tired of hearing the same old play list of songs on Smooth fm. There is plenty of new music that people would love as much as the old music if they got to hear it!
Congratulations Guys on a great segment. Just recently discovered it!
Last Thursday I heard ,I think it was two songs by a female artist with a great voice. I think both songs were covers of classics. I heard her name Zoe "Ashenall" or something similar. Anyone know her name or the name of her album?
Hi Douglas...the tracks in question were:
She & Him: “I Could Have Been Your Girl”/”Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me” (from the album, ‘Volume 3’)
Cheers!
