ABC Woodstock
ABC Woodstock begins at 5pm on Friday 14 August and runs through to 10am Monday 17 August 2009 on ABC Digital Radio and online at this page.
Woodstock became the quintessential rock music festival, bringing together hippies, protesters and music fans for “three days of peace and music” and spawning a hit triple album and a film. It came to represent the epitome of 1960’s hedonistic youth, peace, love and music.
Forty years on, ABC Digital Radio launches a special digital radio channel - ABC Woodstock.
Over three days ABC Woodstock will re-live the Woodstock weekend on Digital Radio. You will hear two documentaries on how the festival developed and grew, and then almost fell apart, featuring the people who were there. One documentary is from the USA and has been made to celebrate the 40th anniversary, while the other documentary is from the BBC.
As well, you will hear more of the music than ever before, with performers played in the order they came on stage at the festival.
How to hear ABC Woodstock
Tune your digital radio to ABC Woodstock to hear this special event broadcast from 5pm on Friday 14 until Monday 17 August.
If you can't listen on digital radio you can hear the whole event right here on a dedicated live audio stream, from 5pm AEST:

Congratulations ona real mind bending, blowing programme. Hope you widely make it known as there are a lot of people out there who'll be listening. In Peace!!!!!
I hope this will also be broadcast on dig for those of us who live in areas not yet covered by digital broadcast radio - eg Canberra
Fear not trevorc - you'll be able to hear ABC Woodstock right here via a dedicated stream, from 5pm next Friday
Hiya, Canberrans who can't experience ABC Woodstock via digital radio or online may be interested to know there's a gig happening with local Canberra musos paying tribute to the music of Woodstock. I'll be tuning in online to ABC Woodstock the rest of the time! Have never heard any recordings of it before, apart from Jimi doing Star Spangled Banner of course.
Why digital radio only, with hardly anyone owning a digital set? Taxpayer-funded event for the well-off. It should be on Dig!
Hey Joe, ah, I mean Tony D'Ambra. In the third post it is said that the show will be online as well. Love and peace!
Ah Miss Music you must be a youngster. If your parents remember the 60s they probably have the double LP of Woodstock. AND you can purchase the movie as a double DVD from the ABC shop for only 20 bucks - check it out
i hope there will be a pod cast of this
Thnx for the flashback. Look forward to listening. Hey! If your parents remember the 60's were they really there?
Far out, man, far out! I can't wait!
Just a quick question .. will I be able to pick it up via Dig on my digital TV?
Thanks man (and peace!)
Now this is the best reason to purchase a Digital Radio!
DIG radio heard loud and clear on my home digital TV on Channel 200 - all ready for the weekend.
Hi Ron. You'll be able to hear ABC Woodstock in 2 places - on digital radio and on a dedicated stream via this specific web page. Dig Music will continue to be heard on digital radio, digital TV and online as usual.
You should put this on Dig so more people can listem without having to fork out $150+ for a digital radio .. pretty please!
Ron
Out in RARA land we don't have digital radio. I don't want a
digital radio anyway, digital audio is made using lossy
compression as are the soundtracks on most DVDs and
digital TV. Audio on streaming audio is so bad one wondes
what on earth the bit rate is.
Put Woodstock on analog radio where it belongs.
Shows how out of touch the elites at the ABC are.
I am disgusted that you are not playing this on My dig ABC through my TV. I have looked at the map you have provided and I wouldnt get reception if I bought a radio so thats not an option. No opportunity to listen on computer as speakers would provide a crappy am experience. Shame on you
some great music but sooooo much of it on at ungodly hours. Any chance of being able to buy the soundtrack of the broadcast, or parts of it?
Sounds like a great show this weekend!
For those who missed the festival or simply want to re-live the historic event, Blender Gallery in Sydney is hosting a once in a lifetime Woodstock 40th Anniversary Exhibition. There are 70 images on display by official photographers Henry Diltz, Elliott Landy, Burk Uzzle and Amalie R. Rothschild. This is the first time that these images have been displayed in Australia. The exhibition runs until August 25th 2009. See www.blender.com.au for more details.
Thanks for the heads-up Blender-ers - looks like a fantastic exhib. Will definitely get along & check it out. You guys should try and get your hands on a digital radio & play the Woodstock special as your exhibition soundtrack!!
Hey man, lotta freaks, far out, almost cut my hair but think I'll let my freak flag fly one more time tonight! Peace and love...and stay off the towers!
Woodstock - The Original Record/CD Releases
It is worth noting that One and Two were not completely live at Woodstock. Also the record/CD release "from the original soundtrack" (one) differed from the the Movie Soundtrack (indicated with *).
Woodstock One
Canned Heat 'Going Up the Country' not recorded at Woodstock, from some unknown earlier live recording (Canned Heat were very unhappy about this)
Crosby Stills & Nash + Crosby Stills Nash & Young - vocals and some guitar redubbed in the studio.
Santana: Soul Sacrifice - Edited * (Full Version on 'Santana' Legacy Edition)
Ten Years After: I'm Going Home - Edited *
Sly & The Family Stone: Medley - Edited * (new 6 CD release supposed to contain the complete Medley)
Jimi Hendrix: Medley - Edited, cuts out most of Villanova Junction (complete on Hendrix Live at Woodstock CD & DVD)
Woodstock Two
Crosby Stills Nash & Young - Live this time, note occasionally out of tune guitars
Mountain - Not from Woodstock. Later live recording with different drummer and keyboard player. Two Woodstock tracks are on 'Mountain Live' - Long Red and Waiting To Take You Away another on DVD 'Woodstock: The Music' - Southbound Train
Hey Dig Guys - get off the wacky weed and get this show on the road - supposed to start 7 mins ago
Aaack! Why is this being webcast in such low bitrates?!
Could you please raise the quality, guys?
Hey Guys
You said this would go out on DIG - I've got my set top box hooked up to the stereo ready to enjoy this over the weekend and I'm just gettting the regular programming.
C'mon get the music playing we're all waiting to relive the era!
What's going on. I thought we were getting the concert? We can do without all the documentary crap. Just give us the music. Better still I will play my original LP.
Liz
Not true - if you haven't got a digital radio Woodstock is only available via the live stream on the web site - it's the regular Dig Music programming on the telly.
What's Happen,Why are we waiting
Whats d holdup
So much for all the hype surrounding the Woodstock event on DIG- they somehow neglected to mention that the vast majority of their listeners won't be able to hear it, because it aint being broadcast on DIG. Brilliant strategy for retaining listeners, DIG!
I suppose that for the rest of the weekend we'll be subjected to the usual deluge of jazz and country, despite the fact that there are special channels for that dross. Back to the CD collection.
I am currently listening to ABC Woodstock. I finding this station very interesting.
Who decided not to put this on some medium available
to most Australians? What on earth were they
smoking (and where can I get some)????
Sounds great so far...looking forward to Janis Joplin's set, although not her greatest performance it's well worth a listen. Happy Woodstock 40th - PEACE!!!
trevorc, Chris, Rod - as mentioned, ABC Woodstock is a standalone digital radio station established for this special event. It's a separate station to Dig Music, that's why you won't hear it via your set-top box. You can tune in on digital radio, and we're offering a link to an audio stream on this page.
Daniel G - the current bitrate is as good as it gets for this particular event, but we expect it will be higher for any future broadcasts.
Deano - peace out to you too!!!
Very disappointing!!! All the ABC radio promos for this on ABC Local Radio stated that it would be broadcast on Dig with no mention of any other special station. Get your promos correct in future and don't muck the listeners around. I've got better things to do than sit in front of my computer to hear this.
Not sure if we are going to get "sets" Deano, which is a shame. Unless it is yet to come.
Its a pity you didnt patch this to ABC DIG radio on DTV-B TV Radio for country folks.
Waddya reckon? Do you really think ABC got out those old reel-to-reels or eight-tracks to play back Woodstock. It's all digital - get off the grass! ;-)
Thank you. At Last. Here come the sets.
Cheers.
Woo hoo! Go Richie Havens!
we don't have digital broadcast Canberra - and it's not available through most of the country - just for a few who have purchased units in the cap cities.
the streaming quality is leaving a lot to be desired
Please listen to the chatter on this feedback - whack it up on channel 200 so we can run it through our strero systems
I think this is a great idea. With very few people owning digital radios, that only work in a few capital cities, most of the potential audience is lost. Computer stream, fine if you have unlimited download contracts and ADSL 2, again not available for many people on country properties. I'm on satellite, very slow download. The digital set top box network could have been used by many, but again you did not do that. Who is the ABC aiming at, do they pay more than 8cents a day? Maybe you will get it right next time, but I doubt it. ABC listener for forty years, but I wonder why.
Yeaah! Richie rocked.... in an earlier interview he said he was onstage for 'three hours' but take a look at his setlist. What was he doing up there all that time? ;)
Only ever heard Bert Sommer's 'Jennifer' from Woodstock... hangin' to hear the other 2 tracks.
Very disappointing!!! All the promos for this on ABC Local Radio stated that it was being broadcast on Dig - not on some separate digital station. Please get you promos right in future and don't muck listeners around.
And now the times on the website are incorrect as well. Anything else you want to get wrong with this special while you're at it?!
And now you're not posting messages - just goes from bad to worse.
Right . so the times are the original schedule times. Are we left to guess when any given tracks are going to be on then ?
sad sound quality. sorry not good enough to put up with ABC. I've got better here and elsewhere on the net.
I'm listening over the internet, streaming from http://abc.net.au/streaming/events/network2.asx
mms://media3-ak.abc.net.au.edgestreams.net/reflector:44763.
The stream is only 3 KBps wide so its no wonder it sounds rubbish.
There doesn't seem to be any way of jumping further down the stream, so I have to listen to Santana playing a solo on symbals which seems to have gone on for ages - now its bongos !
I can't stand this any more.
Ends.
